The tragic death of 19-year-old Gursimran Kaur in a Walmart bakery has shocked her community. On the night of October 19, Kaur’s mother, who also worked at the Halifax, Nova Scotia store, made a horrifying discovery. After noticing her daughter had been missing for over an hour, she began to worry and tried to call her. When there was no answer, she started to panic. Eventually, her worst fear came true—Kaur’s lifeless body was found burned in a walk-in oven at the store’s bakery.
The fundraiser, organized by the Maritime Sikh Society, shared the heartbreaking story. Kaur and her mother had worked at the store for two years. Still, nothing could have prepared her mother for the unimaginable horror of finding her daughter this way.
Authorities have yet to confirm the cause of death, and an investigation is ongoing. The Nova Scotia Department of Labour has issued a stop-work order for the bakery as the community grieves.
The fundraiser has raised over $75,000 to support Kaur’s family, who is working to bring her father and brother from India to Canada.
Walmart has temporarily closed the store and offered condolences, saying their focus remains on supporting their employees during this devastating time.
How can workplaces improve safety measures to prevent such devastating incidents?
