Without a doubt, trying new things can be scary — even switching up your usual cold brew order at the coffee shop can spark nerves. But trying new things, aside from java orders, can take you down a path of self discovery.
We all have those friends that post their dozens of hobbies on social media. And as soon as one of their posts pops up — perhaps they are scaling a mountain or making a gorgeous bowl on the pottery wheel — you can’t help but feel a little insecure about your own life. Instead of quickly scrolling past the post in order to avoid those negative feelings, think of how you could bring some hobby-centric excitement into your own life.
A hobby is an activity that you can do in your spare time on a regular basis for pleasure. This can be baking, yoga, rock-climbing, painting, writing, volunteering, cooking, playing golf, running, photography, or reading. The list of potential hobbies is endless, and the hobby that’s right for you will make your face light up at the thought.
New experiences, in the form of a hobby, can lead to unexpected discoveries about yourself, a boost in confidence, and even improved mental health. Pursuing a hobby is also an enjoyable way to shoo away the stress that lingers from work, make you a more interesting person, and depending on the hobby, improve your physical health.
There have been several studies done that link hobbies to overall well-being and happiness. This is because most hobbies require some form of sensory engagement, self-expression, creativity, intellectual stimulation, or relaxation.
September is Self-improvement Month, so there’s no better time to make some positive changes that can support your personal growth. In addition to adding a hobby or two to your roster, you could also fine-tune your sleep hygiene, prioritize your self-care, and take a few people who inspire you out for a drink.
While burning through a couple episodes of reality television every night can alleviate some stress, here are a few hobbies that could bring you even more benefits:
- Painting – sign up for a guided in-person or online class, or get creative on your own. All you need are some paints, a canvas, brushes, and some subject inspo. Painting can improve your concentration and fine motor skills.
- Writing – taking the time to put pen to paper isn’t for the faint of heart. But remember, what you write likely isn’t getting published in the New York Times, nor is it getting read by anyone else. You can write down the day’s events, a story you’ve been thinking about, or go online for helpful writing prompts.
- Rock climbing – if you’re looking to expand your social circle, this physical hobby will do just that. Join the local climbing gym or hit up a nearby outdoor bouldering spot and ask the other climbers for some tips. You’ll have Michelle Obama arms in no time!
- Dancing – physical activities release endorphins, especially dancing when it’s combined with music. You can express yourself by dancing at home solo, or join a dance class by yourself or with a friend. All forms of dance make wonderful hobbies: belly dancing, pole dancing, bollywood, hip-hop, ballet, jazz, and contemporary.
Now, remember that the most important thing with hobbies is that you have fun — not to sound cliche or anything! Being exceptional at whatever you choose is nothing but a bonus, and perfection shouldn’t be something you strive for when exploring a new hobby. Finding an activity that you can do without feeling putting any pressure on yourself will benefit you beyond measure.
Instead of striving for perfectionism, stay focused on the beautiful process of learning and personal growth, and venturing out of your comfort zone. Surrounding yourself with new people may also bring exciting opportunities within your personal and professional life. You never know where a hobby will lead you!
