Kamala Harris Makes History as First Black Woman Nominated for President by the Democratic Party

Vice President Kamala Harris has officially secured enough votes from Democratic delegates to clinch the party’s nomination for president. This monumental achievement makes her the first Black woman and first Asian American to lead a major-party ticket in U.S. history.

Democratic National Committee Chair Jaime Harrison announced the historic news during a virtual event on Friday. Delegates began casting virtual ballots on Thursday, a process set to continue until Monday evening.

Harris expressed her gratitude and excitement, stating, “I am honored to be the presumptive Democratic nominee for president of the United States. I will officially accept your nomination next week once the virtual voting period is closed.”

She added, “Later this month, we will gather in Chicago, united as one party, where we’re going to have an opportunity to celebrate this historic moment together.”

Following President Joe Biden’s decision to end his reelection campaign and endorse Harris, it became clear that she would be the primary contender for the nomination. With swift and widespread support from the party, she quickly secured the necessary endorsements from delegates.

Harris’s journey to this nomination is a significant contrast to her 2020 presidential run. At the time, she exited the race before the Iowa caucuses. Biden’s choice of Harris as his running mate later positioned her as a natural successor when he stepped aside.

In the lead-up to the official nomination, Harris’ campaign raised an impressive $310 million in July. This renewed energy within the Democratic Party underscores the enthusiasm surrounding her candidacy.

Harris is in the final stages of selecting her running mate. Top finalists include prominent figures such as Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz, Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro, and Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg.

As the campaign ramps up, Harris and her vice-presidential pick will hit the battleground states. They will start with a rally in Philadelphia on Tuesday night. While the formal voting for the nomination will conclude virtually, a ceremonial roll call will occur at the Democratic convention in Chicago beginning August 19.

Kamala Harris’ nomination is a groundbreaking moment for Black women and a testament to the heights they can achieve, inspiring future generations to strive for greatness.
