Weini Kelati’s Inspiring Journey from Eritrea to U.S. Olympian

Weini Kelati: NBC News

Weini Kelati’s inspiring journey from Eritrea to becoming an American Olympian began with long runs to school. Born in Tsada Christian, a small village, Kelati often walked or ran for hours just to attend classes.

However, her running talent took her far beyond Eritrea. Ten years ago, she moved to Oregon, where her dream of becoming an Olympian started. Last month, she realized that dream by winning first place at the U.S. Olympic Team Trials.
Kelati lost her father at a young age; consequently, she watched her mother struggle to support their family. Determined to help, she found her calling in middle school when her PE teacher encouraged her to run. She discovered her talent and began competing, aiming to support her family through her success.

Eritrea, one of the least developed and most repressive countries in the world, posed many challenges. In 2014, when Kelati competed at the World Junior Championships in Eugene, Oregon, she saw an opportunity to stay in the U.S. She approached a family waving an Eritrean flag and asked for their help.
Kelati found a cousin in Virginia who took her in and encouraged her to focus on her studies and running. She joined Heritage High School’s track team, excelled, and earned a scholarship to the University of New Mexico, where she won the 2019 NCAA Division I cross-country championships and went pro.

In 2021, Kelati became a U.S. citizen but had to drop out of the Olympic trials due to heat and excitement. She refocused, trusting her training, and in 2024, she won the 10,000 meters at the U.S. Olympic Trials in Eugene.
Weini Kelati’s inspiring journey from Eritrea to Olympic glory is a testament to her perseverance. She hopes her story inspires others to pursue their dreams despite obstacles. “If you don’t give up on what you want to achieve in life, I know you can live your dream one day,” she said.

What obstacles have you overcome in pursuit of your dreams, and how does Weini’s story resonate with your experiences?
