Juneteenth calls for Anti-Racism in the Workplace

One woman is leading the charge.

Juneteenth is a federal holiday in the United States commemorating the emancipation of enslaved African Americans. It marks the day in 1865 that enslaved African Americans in Texas, were told they were free. Also known as “Juneteenth Independence Day,” “Freedom Day” or “Emancipation Day”, Juneteenth has been celebrated since the late 1800s, and yet today, in 2022, racism is still rife in the United States. Are we, as a society, doing enough to combat racism and inequality? Today, Juneteenth is resonating in a different way. While it is a chance to reflect on our emancipation and how far we’ve come, it is also a chance to highlight that we still have a way to go to true emancipation.

Monique Melton is one woman leading the charge and encouraging others to follow suit. Monique is a nationally recognized Black Liberation Educator with international recognition and inclusion in NBC, Forbes, Fast Company, E! News, and more. Now, Monique is calling on all corporations to take the Juneteenth Pledge to stop racism. She is asking every corporation to honor Juneteenth with a Racism 101 Course.

“Black liberation is a daily pursuit that requires an ongoing commitment to anti-racism.”

Monique Melton and her team crafted a Black Liberation Course and Shine Class focusing on Racism 101. The courses have attracted Fortune 500 corporations across the United States. They serve as a training event or team-building challenge that strengthens relationships and fosters more supportive and affirming environments. It’s important for businesses to be conscious of Juneteenth and Racism 101. “We are asking every business to sign up for Racism 101 as your way to start making proactive changes in the workplace and in our world. It’s time to learn what Black Liberation is, why it matters, and how to take action,” Monique says.

This interactive training features a 21-day challenge with a comprehensive workbook, journal prompts, and guides that are designed to build a daily practice of anti-racism. “We believe this work is done best with accountability. I encourage you to invite your friends and family to join you in this challenge,” says Monique. “When you bring together participants from your organization or group to build a daily practice rooted in humanity, you can help to evolve your community. Providing the right educational tools and resources for your team can help dismantle structures of bias and discrimination.”

The 2nd Annual Juneteenth Black Liberation Challenge calls for every corporation to take the pledge to end racism. The goal? 19,000 course sign-ups in honor of Juneteenth.

Remember in 2020 when so many companies and organizations made a commitment to doing this work? Well, many have stayed focused, but many have fallen from that commitment. This Juneteenth, let’s remind them. Share Monique’s mission with your friends, family, co-workers, HR departments, and managers.
