You know those days where you wake up late, skip on the shower, and run out the door with a piece of peanut butter toast in your hand? These kinds of mornings feel rather hectic, and don’t set you up for a successful, predictive day. Since nobody is perfect, it’s alright to have mornings like this once in a while, but following a solid routine the majority of the time will help you in the long run.
In the summer, the days are a little longer and a lot sunnier, providing us with the optimal time to get our morning routine under control. A good morning routine (completed without sticky peanut butter fingers) can boost energy levels, improve mood, and even make you more productive throughout the day. With a better morning under your belt, you hopefully won’t need more than two cups of coffee or a mid-day bag of sugary sweets to get your work done.
Morning routines differ from person to person — or sis to sis — and they should be tailored to your lifestyle and preferences. However, every routine should consist of similar elements like some morning movement, a nutritious breakfast and hydration, and a moment of mindfulness or reflection. Prioritizing these will give you the positive start you need to slay the day.
Here are some things you can do in the mornings to ensure you’re starting every day on the right foot:
Get outside
This is an especially easy activity to fit into your morning routine if you have a dog in your life. It’s a little harder if you don’t have an animal to take for a walk or if it’s raining outside. While getting outside for some physical activity is always a great idea, it’s best to start your day with fresh air.
Exposing yourself to the natural light and air can erase feelings of fatigue and boost your energy, almost like that double shot of espresso you’re used to! Aim for a quick neighborhood walk before getting down to business each morning, cycle into the office, or complete all of your errands by foot instead of driving. If you live near a lake, ocean, or outdoor pool, a quick morning swim in the cool water can also improve your mood and boost energy.
Go screen-free
Starting every morning with a scrolling session on your phone won’t encourage productivity or motivation. Depending on what you see on social media, you might actually be left with some negative feelings.
When you sip your coffee or eat your breakfast, put your phone away and read a book or enjoy the company of those around you.
Incorporate movement
And we aren’t talking about embarking on a massive hike or spending an hour at the gym — all you need is 10 minutes of exercise! By moving your body first thing in the morning, you’ll release feel-good hormones and feel as if you can accomplish anything. Whether you choose to stretch, do a short pilates video on YouTube, or hop on the Peloton bike, your body and mind will thank you.
Drink a glass of water
Technically, your morning tea or coffee contains water, but it also contains caffeine, which is dehydrating. So, it doesn’t count. Before you enjoy your jolt of caffeine, drink an entire glass of water to rehydrate your body. Using a cute water bottle or Stanley mug can encourage you to sip on water throughout the day.
Practice gratitude
Keeping a gratitude journal can improve your mood and keep you focussed on all of the wonderful things in your life. All you have to do is jot down something you’re thankful or grateful for each morning. You can take this reflection a step further by writing down something you like about yourself, setting an intention for that day, and a positive affirmation that’s been resonating with you.
Don’t skip on your skincare
Taking the time out of your busy schedule to care for your skin each morning is an act of self-care. Whether this means applying a full face of makeup or just a tinted sunscreen, you’ll feel more put together and confident. Never skip on the SPF, sis!
