Alexis Smith, Miss Kansas 2024: AbcNews

Alexis Smith, crowned Miss Kansas 2024 in June, opened up about her experience with domestic violence during her final interview at the pageant. Over a month after winning the title on June 8, Smith shared a clip on social media. She highlighted her powerful response to a question about her vision as the next Miss Kansas ambassador.
In her response, Smith revealed that her abuser was in the audience. “My vision as the next Miss Kansas is to eliminate unhealthy and abusive relationships,” she began. “Some of you saw me emotional because my abuser is here today.”

Smith continued with a strong and encouraging message. “But that’s not going to stop me from being on this stage and representing as Miss Kansas. My community deserves healthy relationships. We deserve a life free from domestic violence.”

Reflecting on the moment, Smith wrote in her caption that her Miss Kansas experience took an unexpected turn when her abuser tried to disrupt her peace. “Instead of falling into silence, I chose to live out my vision for a better world,” she added. “I took back my power—not just for myself, but for my dreams and everyone watching and listening.”
Smith emphasized her desire to use her story and advocacy to end unhealthy relationships in all forms. “I might be small in stature, but I stand tall in strength, purpose, and power with hopes of inspiring others to do the same,” she concluded.

Her post received an outpouring of support, with many applauding her courage and sharing their own experiences with domestic violence. One commenter wrote, “From one survivor to another, I am SO SO proud of you for reclaiming this moment for yourself. You will do amazing things.” Another added, “You are truly a queen from the inside out, and I thank you for being a beautiful role model.”
In a July 18 interview with KSNW, Smith reiterated her commitment to advocating for healthy relationships. This follows her own experience with domestic violence. She shared that “every single woman” in her family had been impacted by domestic violence.

Smith referenced her viral social media post during her interview, emphasizing her excitement about her large-scale impact. She also shared her “Respect Reclaimed” message, focusing on healthy relationships and using her talent in ventriloquism to communicate with a younger audience. Smith explained how she uses ventriloquism to create “healthy friend puppets” that teach children about healthy relationships.

We believe public figures sharing their personal experiences with domestic violence can have a positive impact on societal attitudes and support systems. What do you think?
